A Habitat Home is a Win-Win
I鈥檝e had the pleasure to serve with Habitat for Humanity several times since starting with DISHER, and I want everyone to know that it is a fantastic experience.聽You learn a lot, have fun, and it really changes people鈥檚 lives. My latest opportunity to help was this past October.聽For those who have not yet experienced building a Habitat Home, here is what a typical day looks like:
8:30 am. The day begins with prayer.聽I knew prayer would be needed particularly for me as this was the first two-story house I ever worked on鈥 and Soffit was on the agenda. (Soffit is near the roof).

9:00 am. Everyone volunteers for a position or task. Despite all the prayers, I volunteered for moving a lot of fill dirt in a wheel barrow comfortably on the ground level.聽That鈥檚 the great thing about a habitat build 鈥 they accommodate all skill levels and phobias.

12:00 pm. It鈥檚 break time for lunch.聽On this particular day, people from the local church, (St. Roberts) who sponsored the Habitat build kindly brought us chili.

1:30 pm.聽There鈥檚 more work to be done but the jobs on the ground have dried up.聽I try 鈥 really try to avoid climbing anything; however, I find myself on scaffolding with tin snips cutting siding.聽It鈥檚 a good thing the day started with prayer.

2:00 pm.聽A fellow DISHER teammate, Dave Courtade, needs help placing support posts for a porch overhang.聽I鈥檓 certain the kind of help I鈥檓 capable of isn鈥檛 really what Dave is asking for, but it gets me off the scaffolding and Dave won鈥檛 be truly disappointed until well after he鈥檚 accepted my offer.

4:30 pm. It鈥檚 already time to clean up.

What I want to express to you is that it鈥檚 a fun day, and I always learn more than I give.聽I should probably be paying Habitat for teaching me so much. On most home builds I鈥檝e been able to meet the owners. The recipients are truly appreciative of 鈥渁 hand up, not a hand out鈥. If you get a chance to help with Habitat, take it from me, you鈥檒l take away more than you give鈥 regardless of how hard you try.
